World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Throughout the world, the 28th of April marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, aiming to promote safe, healthy and decent work for all workers. Celebrating this day is a part of the Global Strategy for Safety at Work of the International Labour Organisation which promotes creation of the global preventive culture for safety and health in which all interested sides are included.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work since 2003, and 28th of April is also a day when the world trade union movement remembers the victims of accidents and illnesses.

The theme of this years World Day for Safety and Health at Work is:

The Promotion of Safety and Health in green economy

Throughout the world, the trend is to lean towards the green economy more and more, the economy that has minimal negative impact on the environment. As the green economy progresses, it is of vital importance that safety and health at work be integrated in the policies of green work places. Even if some work places are considered green, the technologies used may not be completely safe. Green work places should not only protect the environment, but also the safety and health of workers. The Programme of Safety and Health and the Environment of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) – SafeWork has prepared a report which provides the basic information on this topic. In it, safety at work is marked as an integral part of the promotion of green work places and green economy as key initiators for achieving economic and social development which is also ecologically sustainable.
