THE REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA INSPECTORATE

Meat trade controlled by inspection services

While appearing at the Morning Programme of the Republic of Srpska Radio and Television, Vladimir Milijević, Chief Republic Veterinary Inspector stressed that meat being traded at the Republic of Srpska market is inspected.

“In order for meat to appear on the market at all first of all the animal must be healthy for the trade to be allowed. First of all we talk about contagious diseases that appear here from time to time. After that, each animal needs to have a document proving it is healthy. When the animal arrives to the abattoir, a veterinarian examines it once again, and after the slaughter the meat is again checked.  Considering the fact that meat is perishable goods it requires a temperature regime, that is meat is required to be preserved at temperature up to eight degrees from processing and storing, through transport until it arrives to trade chains”, said Milijević.

In terms of irregularities that the veterinary inspection service finds during inspections of meat, those irregularities most frequently relate to shelf lives and grounding of meat. “As we know, the grounding of meat can be performed exclusively with the consumer present, except in cases when the meat is already packaged and comes from the meat industry. In general, there are not a lot irregularities with fresh meat”, said Milijević.

He stressed that we mush work had on educating consumers, because each trader is obliged to show a declaration that has all information on the products and its origin, that is the information where the animal was born, slaughtered and processed in the end. Milijević pointed out that a buyer has all necessary information available, but it is necessary to work on education and developing a habit to read declarations.

“We invite all buyers to inform the Inspectorate if they notice anywhere that food, meat in this case, does not have valid declaration”, Milijević emphasised.
